Genuine cards have consistent print quality, correct card stock and weight, sharp text, and a holo pattern that matches the card's era and set. Counterfeits usually give themselves away through blurry text, an off-color palette, a font that doesn't match, or a back that feels too thin or too glossy. Third-party authentication and grading services are the most reliable way to confirm a card before a high-value sale.

Grading companies score a card's centering, corners, edges, and surface, then assign a number — typically on a 1–10 scale — that summarizes its condition. A higher grade means less wear and better centering, which is why two copies of the same card can sell for very different prices depending on their grade.

Older sets were printed in smaller quantities, and far fewer surviving copies are still in top condition after decades of handling. That scarcity, combined with nostalgia from the original generation of collectors, tends to push vintage prices well above what a comparably rare modern card commands.

Keep cards in a penny sleeve and a rigid top-loader (or a graded slab, if applicable) rather than loose in a binder page long-term. Store them upright, away from direct sunlight and humidity swings, since UV exposure and moisture are what typically cause fading, warping, or edge damage over time.

Rare, well-graded cards — especially vintage ones — have shown strong demand over the past decade, but the market can swing sharply with hype cycles and is far less liquid than stocks or bonds. Treat it the way you'd treat any alternative asset: diversify, buy what's verified, and go in with a long time horizon rather than expecting quick returns.
